Specialty Description
According to the plan and statement of the program, the basic education principles for Software engineering are ‘broad disciple, solid foundation, high quality and emphasis on ability'. Students enrolling in computer science and technology, soft engineering and network engineering will be offered the same courses in the first one and half years, during which students are expected to establish a solid and systematic knowledge base of theories of computer-related majors. At the end of first semester in year two, students choose their own specializations. Currently the software engineering program has two specializations. Subject of computer application is one of the important subjects in Jiangsu province. This major is to cultivate specialized personnel in software developing and research, who can work on software development, software technology management and software program management. Features of this program lie in that it follows the leading software technology world-wide, meets the requirement of rapid development of the software technology, and emphasizes cultivation of practical skills, to meet the need for software developers in society. This program aims at constructing a teaching system combining elite education and mass education, research and practical training, with subject building as major business, student education as centre, personnel training as foundation and technology innovation as motivation.

Students are offered main courses of J2EE Practical Tutorial, VISUAL C++ Programming Language, Java Programming Language, Introduction to Compiler, Operating System, Probability and Statistics, Assembly Language, Introduction to Computer, Computer Networks, Computer Organization, Discrete Mathematics, Object-oriented Modeling, Software Design Pattern, Software Project Management , Data Structure, Database System, Algorithm Design and Analysis, Distributed System, Software Testing, Software Architecture, and Human-computer Interaction Techniques.

Qualifications/expertise after completing the program

This major combines computer software, hardware and network. It focuses on training of software theory and ability of software developing. Students are required to master the basic knowledge of software and hardware of computer system, and knowledge of design, research, development and comprehensive application of computer system, and to conduct basic software research and development, to grasp design techniques of computer system, computer network technologies and practical skills, to acquire ability of analyzing, designing, testing and maintaining system software and applications.
Postgraduates of this major are to acquire knowledge and skills in these following aspects:
1. Master basic theory and knowledge of computer science and technology;
2. Master software system required methods of analyzing and designing;
3. Ability of designing and testing and maintaining software,
4. Good communication skills and teamwork spirit
5. Follow the updates of international development in software areas and quickly adapt to the latest software developing model;
6. Methods of document retrieve and information enquiry, and ability of acquiring information
7. To know computer software related laws, regulations, and intellectual property rights.

All applicants whose native language is not Chinese must prove Chinese proficiency. Those who have reached new HSK Level 4 or above meet the NUST regular standards for admission. Applicants whose native language is not English but intend to attend the courses conducted in English must prove English proficiency with IELTS or TOEFL scores.
